How to Teach Letter B to ESL Beginners (Ages 3–5)

This ESL phonics lesson plan introduces the letter “B” through Brushing Bear, the second character in the ABC Starter curriculum. Building on Week 1, this lesson adds a quick homework check-in before moving into new vocabulary, tracing practice, and a review game.

Homework Check and Greeting (0–8 minutes)

Start with the same self-introduction routine — each child says “My name is ______.” Then check last week’s homework: look over each student’s Letter A and a coloring pages, mark completed work with a red circle, and write “Good Job!” to encourage them before moving on to this week’s lesson.

Character Introduction and Vocabulary Practice (8–15 minutes)

Introduce Brushing Bear with the character video, then write the four target words on the whiteboard next to their picture cards (or print and paste picture cutouts if a whiteboard isn’t available). Call students up one at a time, say a word, and have them point to the matching picture. Repeat each word together as a class after every turn.

  • Bear — the character itself and the letter B’s keyword
  • Balloon and Bell — familiar objects that reinforce the same beginning sound
  • Backpack — an everyday school item that keeps practice relevant to students’ lives

Rainbow Tracing Book Practice (15–23 minutes)

Students complete pages 3–4 of the Rainbow Tracing Book while the Brushing Bear Song plays quietly in the background. Minimizing the video during this activity keeps children focused on tracing rather than watching the screen.

Vocabulary Game: Simon Says

Reinforce body-part vocabulary (Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Mouth) with a quick round of Simon Says — the same low-prep review game from Week 1, which keeps energy high after focused tracing work.

Wrap-Up and Review

Close by reviewing all four target words — Bear, Balloon, Bell, and Backpack — together as a class, praising every child by name. This short, predictable ending helps young ESL learners feel confident before moving on to homework.
