How to Teach Letter A to ESL Beginners (Ages 3–5)

This free ESL phonics lesson plan introduces the letter “A” through Angry Ant, the first character in the ABC Starter curriculum. It’s designed for non-native English speakers meeting the alphabet for the first time, so every activity uses simple, repeatable language a non-specialist teacher can lead with confidence.

Warm-Up and Character Introduction (0–8 minutes)

Start with a simple self-introduction routine — each child says “My name is ______.” Then introduce Angry Ant with the character video so students meet the mascot they’ll associate with the letter A all week.

Teaching Target Vocabulary: Angry, Ant, Arrow, Apple

Write the four target words on the whiteboard next to their picture cards. Call students up one at a time, say a word, and have them point to the matching picture. Repeat each word together as a class after every turn — repetition at this age is what makes vocabulary stick.

  • Angry — the character’s core emotion and easiest word to act out
  • Ant — the animal itself, and the letter A’s keyword
  • Arrow and Apple — everyday objects that reinforce the same beginning sound

Rainbow Tracing Book Practice (13–23 minutes)

Students complete pages 1–2 of the Rainbow Tracing Book while the Angry Ant Song plays quietly in the background. Minimizing the video during this activity keeps children focused on tracing rather than watching the screen.

Vocabulary Game: Simon Says

Reinforce body-part vocabulary (Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Mouth) with a quick round of Simon Says — a low-prep game that keeps energy high after focused tracing work.

Wrap-Up and Review

Close by reviewing all four target words together as a class, praising every child by name. This short, predictable ending helps young ESL learners feel confident before moving on to homework.
